Artist Statement

Growing up in rural Alberta has given this artist a connection with nature that began from an early age with looking for variations of color and patterning in the surrounding landscape. After many explorations of medium and subject matter, and experiencing a torn rotator cuff that made it impossible to carry out easel work, the artist had to find a different technique to carry on. The artist’s work has evolved to focus on this inspiration. Inspiration for each painting can come from the colors of a flower or of a sunset, or the reflections in a body of water or just the need to work with a certain color palette.

Each painting represents an abstracted form of landscape. Works are produced by pouring acrylic paint in liquid form. Each layer of new color is added and manipulated until a satisfactory resonance is achieved and the artist can view it as landscape. By incorporating a wet-on-wet technique, the work embraces the surrealist approach of using chance happenings. It also carries over past preferences  of this technique in using watercolor The suggestion of an image is left ambiguous to allow individual interpretation and the traces of the movement are purposely left visible to show the qualities of the paint.
